The Seat Guru

Yes, there is a website called SeatGuru.com that tells you everything about the layout of airplanes. This is pretty nice when you book a flight long in advance and can get a seat reserved. It has all major airlines and for each of them all the different planes. Information includes things like a rating (seat is good, medium or bad), where power ports are located and other things.

Washington

In early October 2007 I spent a week in the DC area and was lucky enough to have a Sunday for sightseeing. The weather was gorgeous and I had a really great day (almost with a sunburn).

First I went to the Arlington National Cemetery, which is definitely worth a visit. I was rather surprised about the impression it made on me. When I visited the cemetery of Verdun in France from World War I, it made me feel rather depressed. Especially if you see the enormously long lines of tombstones, all in a precise geometric formation, it doesn’t bring up happy feelings. Arlington was different here. Although it is most certainly not a happy place, it made me feel much more like on a normal cemetery.

After that I drove into Washington and found a parking space near the Jefferson Memorial. From there I walked around to get an impression and was quite fascinated. Well, that’s what capitals are largely built for. I didn’t have comfortable shoes, so I only spent about 2-3 hours there, leaving out the White House and the Smithsonian (shame on me). But it was a great day anyway and will certainly try to get back.

Restaurant “Fish” in Prague

During a recent trip to Prague a colleague and I ended up in the restaurant Fish next to the Vltava river and quite near to the famous Charles Bridge. This was pure coincidence, since we had decided to just enter the next restaurant that would be “somewhat acceptable”. (It had been a very hot day and we were longing for a good Czech beer.)

We were not disappointed, on the contrary. Having ordered the beer without even looking at the menu, choosing the food was more difficult. We had a (positive) decision problem, because so many things looked really nice. I ended up with a starter (salad with duck breast) and a desert (pear baked with cinnamon honey, vanilla icecream with almonds and chocolate) but without a main course. The salad was nice but the desert was by far the best I ever had. My colleague had a carpaccio of tiger prawns (starter) and some fish as main course. Both were excellent as well.

The service was good but did not match the quality of the food. In terms of price it was certainly not cheap but worth it. So overall I can definitely recommend going there. Here are some logistics (no garantuee that they are correct, sorry):
