Restaurant “Fish” in Prague

During a recent trip to Prague a colleague and I ended up in the restaurant Fish next to the Vltava river and quite near to the famous Charles Bridge. This was pure coincidence, since we had decided to just enter the next restaurant that would be “somewhat acceptable”. (It had been a very hot day and we were longing for a good Czech beer.)

We were not disappointed, on the contrary. Having ordered the beer without even looking at the menu, choosing the food was more difficult. We had a (positive) decision problem, because so many things looked really nice. I ended up with a starter (salad with duck breast) and a desert (pear baked with cinnamon honey, vanilla icecream with almonds and chocolate) but without a main course. The salad was nice but the desert was by far the best I ever had. My colleague had a carpaccio of tiger prawns (starter) and some fish as main course. Both were excellent as well.

The service was good but did not match the quality of the food. In terms of price it was certainly not cheap but worth it. So overall I can definitely recommend going there. Here are some logistics (no garantuee that they are correct, sorry):

  1. The “Fish” restaurant by the river is a very good recommendation, not picked up by many travel guides. My wife and I had dinner there and enjoyed very well prepared fresh fish and pasta. The waitress was very pleasant, but too busy. The setting was beautiful. The management could do better by adding some moderately priced wines, and we were upcharged the equivalent of $5 US for parmesan cheese for the pasta. DR

  2. The last time we visited Prague, we were surprised to find pike on the menu (I think it was called štika) because it’s not a fish that serve as food back in Britain. I was skeptical, but we ordered it and OMG it was fantastic – unlike any other fish I’ve tasted. The next time we said we’ll try the zander (candát) as that’s meant to be even more tasty, pan-fried with some light sauce. Even just thinking about that pike makes me want to visit Prague against soon!

We didn’t actually get to visit this specific restaurant but we will next time on our next Prague city breaks for sure. I remember reading somewhere that the Czech Republic is know affectionately as the land that vegetables forget, but I’m just fine with this as long as they keep up their high standards of fish.

Are there any other fish restaurants or recipes you advise me to try?
